Organic Essence - Limited Edition Chawan Collection
Introducing our Chawan collaboration with Croatian artist Ljiljana Fučkor — an exquisite blend of organic forms and matcha essence. Crafted in limited edition, these stoneware matcha bowls embody artistry and durability, creating a perfect union for your tea experience.
The organic collaboration
As one of our first major product collabs, we are super proud that it’s a Chawan collection with a Croatian artist. The collaboration came about quite easily and very organic, pun intended. We reached out to Ljiljana, and she was super interested since she has extensive experience with creation of tea pottery and love for the Asian culture. Funny enough, her daughter was one the first people that had a matcha brand in Croatia, meaning Ljiljana was indeed very familiar with matcha as a lifestyle. So it was simply a perfect match!
Ljiljana Fučkor - the artist, the sculptor
Ljiljana Fučkor-Grahovac was born in 1968 in Rijeka, but has lived in Kastav almost her entire life. She graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka. Ljiljana participated in many solo and group exhibitions, and has been awarded several times for her work.
Her field of interest is the exploration of organic form through sculpture. Fascination with sculpture, ceramics and clay started many years ago in South Korea. Korea encouraged her research and study of traditional Chawan vessels intended for tea ceremony, which she still does intensively today.
When creating ceramics in her studio, she uses different available materials, from terracotta to porcelain, which she shapes herself and uses a professional technological approach to make the colorful outer glazes.
Organic Essence - Limited Edition Chawan Collection
This limited edition series of 30 handcrafted Chawans seamlessly merges organic forms with the essence of matcha. Each piece is a testament to the artistry that unfolds when the worlds of organic tea and masterful craftsmanship converge.
The matcha bowls are all burned at very high temperature of 1250°C. This is the main reason why they are stoneware, and not regular ceramics. Stoneware is much more durable and resistant to damage.
Also, the percentage of chamotte is what makes them firm. Chamotte are particles with high aluminum and silicon ratio. By burning them at high temperatures, silicon melts and creates a glass structure within the ceramics and aluminum gives stability for the outer glaze.
This way the ceramic becomes hard as stone and impervious for liquids. This is most visible in the chawans with dark bottom - they have 40% chamotte meaning that the silicon within the ceramic body has completely melted and made it into stoneware.
To create one bowl, it takes between 10-15 days, depending on the crafting process.
All the outer glazes are food safe, and all chawans are dishwasher safe.
