Salted Honey Hojicha Latte: Roasted, Sweet & Perfectly Balanced

Meet your new cozy-weather favorite. This Salted Honey Hojicha Latte pairs the warm, toasty, caramel-like flavor of roasted hojicha with silky milk and a touch of salted honey. Because hojicha is roasted, it's naturally low in bitterness and lower in caffeine than matcha, which makes it a lovely choice for afternoons and evenings. Serve it warm on a chilly day, or over ice when you want something refreshing.

Ingredients:

  • 15 g honey

  • A small pinch of flaky sea salt

  • 200 g milk, warm or cold (dairy or plant-based)

  • 4 g hojicha powder

  • 30 g hot water

  • Ice cubes (optional, if serving cold)

Preparation Steps:

1. Make the Salted Honey

Stir a small pinch of flaky sea salt into 15 g of honey until it dissolves. If your honey is thick, warm it for a few seconds so it mixes easily.

2. Add the Salted Honey to the Glass

Spoon the salted honey into the bottom of a tall glass.

3. Add Ice Cubes (Optional)

If you're serving the latte cold, add a handful of ice cubes on top of the honey.

4. Pour the Milk

Slowly pour 200 g of milk over the honey (and ice, if using). Pour gently and down the side of the glass to keep the layers distinct.

5. Prepare the Hojicha

Whisk 4 g of hojicha powder with 30 g of hot water until smooth, with no lumps.

6. Top with the Hojicha

Gently pour the hojicha over the milk layer. Stir before sipping to bring the salty-sweet honey and the toasty hojicha together.

Pro Tips

Keep the salt to a small pinch: it should lift the sweetness and the roasted flavor, not make the drink taste salty. For a warm version, steam or heat the milk first and stir everything together in a mug. For a deeper, more caramel-like taste, try a darker honey such as chestnut or forest honey.
